Candidates Offer More Opinions On Outdoor Issues (Down East)

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Down East posts an article by George Smith, the executive director of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, about candidates responses to SAM’s gubernatorial questionnaire. The candidates, including Eliot Cutler, responded to questions about regulations for hunting and fishing as well as resource management. Responding to a question about growing Maine’s outdoor economy Cutler said:

“We need to build, promote, and sustain the Maine ‘brand’ – protect and enhance the quality of the hunting and fishing experiences we offer; improve our roads that provide access for tourists; develop a four-season recreation industry; maintain intact coastal and riverfront communities with targeted strategies to cut the costs of electricity, health care and public services and by connecting many of these communities to pipeline natural gas; and be ensuring that small businesses do not die from lack of working capital.”

Portland, Maine – Speaking at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) in Portland tonight, Independent candidate for governor Eliot Cutler said that as governor he will ask the Maine Congressional Delegation to assist him in persuading the federal government to give Maine exclusive management authority over fishing resources out to a limit of 25 miles off the coast.

“We can do a much better job managing this critical resource ourselves,” Cutler said. “We would agree to be judged on performance and outcomes over a 15-year period – with interim reviews every five years – against clearly stated goals for conserving and rebuilding fish stocks and for protecting species whether they are inshore spawning or wintering offshore.

Cutler said that Maine fishermen should not to be forced to compete against industrial fishing competitors, who have different goals, different criteria for success, and no experience that comes even close to matching Maine’s success in the self-regulation of its lobster fishery.

Cutler also said that he would invest in the Maine brand, and that our failure to develop and promote the Maine brand has hampered our ability to develop export opportunities.

“We are sitting on a gold mine, and we need to invest in it,” Cutler said. “Branding Maine isn’t something we need to do just for fish or lobsters or blueberries. This is something we have to do for everything we represent as a state. It is for tourism, paper products, boatbuilding, schools and colleges, our places and our people – the whole experience of living and working in Maine.”

NEWSLETTER: The Barefoot Contessa and Buying Local

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

My long-time friend Ina Garten, the Food Network’s Barefoot Contessa, came to Portland this past week for a fundraising reception and luncheon. Almost 250 fans came to hear Ina, and I think that most – if not all – left as Cutler for Governor supporters, as well. I told Ina during our open mic question and answer session that one of the best aspects of her visit was that I got to have lunch with more than 200 Maine women and just a few of their spouses. Our guests asked questions, Ina signed their cookbooks, and we all enjoyed a wonderful lunch of locally grown food. The event was a huge success!

One of the key items that Ina and I talked about was the importance of buying local. Mainers today buy only about 4% of our $3 billion in annual food purchases from local sources. If we increased that to just 10%, we could create more than 20,000 new jobs and increase farm incomes in Maine by $180 million. Plus, we’d all be eating more local, fresh and healthy food!

Eliot and Ina

Ina and I shared a number of laughs during the Q&A.

Later that weekend, Senator Elizabeth Schneider hosted a meet-and-greet for me in Orono. We talked at length about how to lower the cost of living and doing business in Maine so that we can attract investment and create jobs, incomes, and opportunities for Maine people.

Schneider Event Orono

Karen Turnstrup asked a number of excellent questions.

I also campaigned during the past week in Westbrook, Hallowell, and Old Town, and we’re looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at a meet ‘n greet fundraising reception at the Crocker House in Hancock.

More Media Coverage

The Ina Garten visit not only raised money, it also helped garner increased exposure for some of Eliot’s ideas.

The Portland Press Herald, in an article titled “’Barefoot Contessa’ Draws Crowd for Cutler,” covered some of Eliot’s ideas on agriculture and the economy:

“Cutler [used] the opportunity to pitch some of his policy ideas, including a couple linked to Garten’s expertise. He said that Mainers buy only 4 percent of their food from local sources and if that figure was increased to 10 percent, it would produce thousands of jobs and put millions of dollars in Maine farmers’ pockets.”

Former state controller and Cutler supporter Ed Karass penned a hard-hitting op-ed piece titled “Candidate Paul LePage: The Wizard of Waterville?” It appeared in Saturday’s Bangor Daily News, the largest circulation issue of any newspaper in Maine, and laid to rest the mistaken notion that LePage’s record as mayor makes him a good bet as governor.

Giving China a Taste of Maine (Portland Press Herald)

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

The Portland Press Herald reports that Independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler invites potential Chinese importers to see the state’s lobster industry up close and personal. Here is an excerpt:

“I want them to understand Maine lobster is better than Australia and New Zealand lobster, that we produce enough to export to China, and that it is a sustainable fishery — which is very important to China — and that they and we can make a lot of money with trade going that way,” Cutler said.

A delegation of businessmen from China today are taking a first hand look at two of Maine’s most well-known exports, lobsters and blueberries.

Maine Food Producers Eye Markets in China (Bangor Daily News)

Friday, June 18th, 2010

The Bangor Daily News covered the visit by a group of leading Chinese businessmen to “blueberry growers and processors, a halibut aquaculture firm and lobster harvesters and processors” at the invitation of Independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler. The tour shows the export potential for Maine’s products:

“We’re looking to expand our business to export markets,” said Thomas Gardner, Wyman’s vice president for sales and marketing, whose business card has one side printed in Chinese. “The No. 1 target is China.”

Gardner said the company, which had annual sales of $70 million in 2009, made its first trip to China in May and received “very high” interest from some potential import partners.

“We were very encouraged from that trip,” Gardner said. “We were very excited. This is a major customer.”

RELEASE: Top Chinese Business Leaders to Visit Maine to Explore Export Opportunities for Maine Products

Monday, June 14th, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PORTLAND, Maine – The chairman of the largest and most important Chinese importer of food and the chairman of one of China’s most significant investment funds will lead a delegation of Chinese businessmen on a visit to Maine on Friday. They will explore the potential for substantial purchases of lobster, wild blueberries and other Maine products, and examine investment opportunities in the Maine aquaculture industry.

“With all the great products we have in Maine, we can make trade with China a two-way street,” said Eliot Cutler, Independent candidate for governor, who will be hosting the group in Maine.  “I am confident that having these highly influential Chinese business leaders visit our state will be just the beginning of some important new relationships and opportunities for Maine companies.”

Ning Gaoning, Chairman of the China Overseas Food Corp (COFCO), and Fang Fenglei, chairman of the investment fund Hopu, will be joined by Liu Mengze, President of Ceroilfood, one of COFCO’s most important subsidiaries, and Guy Cui, one of Mr. Fang’s partners in Hopu.

The group is coming to Maine at the invitation of Cutler, who spent two years in China opening the Beijing office for his law firm and developing business opportunities.

“Getting Maine people back to work and growing our economy will depend in part on developing new export opportunities for Maine products,” Cutler said. “China is the fastest growing big economy in the world. It is a market that holds huge potential for Maine, and I want to do everything I can to help Maine companies get a foot in the door.”

Cutler cited Maine lobsters as a good fit for the Chinese market. The Chinese currently import lobsters from Australia and New Zealand, but he said those lobsters can’t begin to compare to Maine’s. “They don’t even have real claws!” Cutler said.

“The lobster industry has been hurting due to historically low prices and high costs.  I have met with fishermen, processors, and leaders of Maine’s lobster industry up and down the coast, and they all have told me that they have to expand into new markets to survive,” Cutler said. “I know that the decision makers who are visiting Maine next week will be impressed by the quality of our lobsters and the network of fisherman, dealers and processors who can deliver live and processed product to them.”

Cutler said the group will go out on Casco Bay Friday morning to haul some traps with a local fisherman and learn about the sustainability of Maine’s lobster harvest. They will also tour Portland Shellfish Company, a local processor that exports to over 20 countries internationally, among them China and Hong Kong, and will meet with other members of the Maine Lobster Promotion Council and other industry representatives.

Later in the day Friday the group will head down east to visit Jasper Wyman & Son wild blueberry operations in Cherryfield and Deblois. Wyman’s is the largest U.S.-owned wild blueberry grower/processor in Maine and has a great interest in expanding into the Chinese market.

The group will end its visit to Maine with a tour of the Maine Halibut Farms, an aquaculture company at the University of Maine’s Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research in Franklin.
