Cutler Only Candidate Withholding Support For MDIFW Funding Through General Taxation (Black Bear Blog)

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

In his Q&A with the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine(SAM), The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Maine Audubon Society (MAS), Independent candidate Eliot Cutler was the only candidate who withheld from making sweeping promises about raising taxes at a time when Maine is possibly facing a $1 billion budget shortfall.

“The next governor is going to be confronted with massive budget shortfalls, so I have not and will not make any promises to any group about funding levels. That said, I recognize the important work of the IF&W and how that work benefits the general public.

“I don’t believe in across-the-board cuts and I have said many times in this campaign that I want to invest in Maine’s competitive advantages. Our natural environment and our fish and wildlife are key assets for our state, and we must invest in them to protect our quality of life and to attract sportsmen and other visitors.

“So while I cannot in good conscience commit to any specific level or minimum amount of funding, I can assure you that I intend to spend our hard-earned tax dollars strategically to adequately fund those departments and programs that enhance Maine’s competitive advantages and to cut programs that neither operate efficiently nor provide an adequate return to Maine people,” concluded Cutler.

Gubernatorial Candidates Offer Answers at Maine Forest Products Council Forum (DownEast.com)

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

George Smith, executive director of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, posted a review of the gubernatorial forum sponsored by the Natural Resources Network at Downeast.com. The forum focused on natural resources-related issues facing Maine today.

George covered a number of Eliot’s answers from the forum, which we have listed below:

1. On Energy Independence

Cutler sees natural gas as an important ingredient in lowering costs and supports an LNG plant in Maine. He would shift home heating from oil to electricity. His most innovative idea – and it’s really an old one – is to create a public power authority.

2. The Future of the North Woods

Cutler called for changes in the way we do easements, citing landowners’ concerns about liability and value. He said resolving these concerns is “centrally important to continuing uses in the north woods.”

3. The Sunday Hunting Debate

Cutler said he “is not opposed to [Sunday Hunting].”

4. Consolidation of Maine’s Natural Resource Agencies

Cutler elaborated on his opposition to consolidation, saying, “I’ve done government reorganizations at the federal level — some worked, some didn’t. Moving boxes around is not smart business. When you have agencies that relate directly to what centrally defines our state and manage our resources, mergers don’t make sense. What does make sense is changing the way we do business to reduce costs and tear down the wall of no.”

Background Checks on the Purchase of Guns & Firearms

Monday, March 15th, 2010

“I support the current law requiring background checks on firearms purchases from licensed dealers and would support extending background checks to private sales (except between family members) and sales at gun shows if this could be accomplished in ways that don’t add additional costs or burdens on sellers and buyers. For example, there might be a toll-free number that sellers could call to get verification immediately over the phone.”
