At that firm, Cutler was offering a combination of legal and political expertise. He was in court, and was also making deals between counties and cities. They grew the firm into the second largest land use/environmental practice in the United States, said Cutler.

Barry Conaty, a friend and former colleague, said Cutler has a “keen strategic mind,” and that he was adept at taking abstract issues and reducing them to concrete problems that could be solved with distinct steps.

Maine Gubernatorial Candidate, Eliot Cutler, Visits Pratt & Whitney to Discuss Reforming State Business Regulations (Foster’s Daily Democrat)

Foster’s Daily Democrat ran a story about Eliot’s visit to Pratt & Whitney and his discussions with senior executives in the manufacturing sector about building a more friendly business environment in Maine.

NORTH BERWICK, Maine — Gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler took aim at business regulations, the state’s educational focus and health care reform during a visit to jet engine-maker Pratt & Whitney Thursday morning.

Cutler, an independent seeking to replace Gov. John Baldacci in November, met with officials from Pratt and other manufacturing businesses in the state. The roundtable event was part of a series of candidate forums hosted by the Manufacturers Association of Maine.

With a public service resume that includes having a hand in drafting the Clean Air Act and serving on a board at the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine, Cutler introduced himself to Pratt officials by saying he was a shareholder in its parent company, United Technologies Corp.
